The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Vienna participated in the “Diplomatic Society” reception, together with the Missions of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Thailand, at the Grand Hotel in Vienna on 09 September 2026.
The joint event, aimed at promoting the local cultures and cuisines of the countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), attracted guests from diplomatic missions, the corporate sector, public service and the media.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka organized a stall to promote Ceylon Tea and serve traditional Sri Lankan food items to the guests.
The Chief Guest of the event, Deputy Chief of Protocol of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria, Christoph Meyenburg, appreciated the cooperation among the BIMSTEC countries in Vienna in showcasing the unity, rich cultures and culinary traditions of the region to European society.
Heads of Mission of Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand addressed the gathering. Delivering a short statement, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, Dayani Mendis, briefed the gathering on Sri Lanka’s role in BIMSTEC, including its chairmanship on two occasions, and noted that the Fifth BIMSTEC Summit held in Colombo in March 2022 marked an important milestone in the institutional development of the organization.
The guests visiting the Sri Lanka stall were treated to Ceylon Tea and Sri Lankan food. The event also featured cultural performances by BIMSTEC member countries, including a traditional Sri Lankan dance.
